Black Love Mural Fest, July 2020

Mural: The 5th Little Girl: Sarah Collins : July 2020. Civic Center Park, Denver, Colorado.

When we speak about 16th Street Baptist Church bombing, most quickly remember there were four little girls that died that day. Very few realize that there were originally five little girls and that one survived. July 2020 was the first year I participated in The Black Mural Love Fest. An event that would provide mural space to selected artists in Denver’s Civic Center Park. This was my homage to Sarah Collins: the one little girl who survived. Because muraling is often in outdoor spaces, naturally there is much interaction with passersby that are curious about what you’re doing. I had many conversations with people that had absolutely no idea there was a fifth little girl that lived. That is why her story is so important. Obviously she was very affected losing her sister and friends in the bombing. Sadly, the grief of those deaths swallowed a community while she lay recovering in a hospital.
